We had to get up early the next morning and get Mom off to the airport. She was actually flying to my home (where I wasn't!). She would spend the next week or so until I got home with my wife Susan - who is an absolute saint for doing that. I didn't plan it that way, Mom had her ticket a month or 6 week ago and I only decided fairly last minute that I could actually do the trip. It just worked out that way.
Steve fixed another awesome meal of some special French toast. After sister Dixie left with Mom to the airport I got my gear together and loaded up the motorcycle and headed off for the coast about 10:30 or so.
I went west and then took highway 6 to Tillamook, OR. Then I took the "Three capes drive" and went up to Cape Mears. It was much cooler (about 60 or 65 and very windy). From there I rode south on the Cape Mears loop. It was quite a broken road but at times it curved through some trees that completely covered the road like a roof. Very neat!
Cape Mears - so windy and cold! |
I eventually got back on the 101 (Oregon Coast Highway) and headed south. It was a very twisty, scenic drive through some small towns and hills. I had heard about the famous clam chowder at Mo's so I stopped around 2 pm in Lincoln City at one of the 3 locations for Mo's. I got a bowl of chowder, some garlic toast, and a hot apple cider. After a few hours of riding in the cool ocean spray it really hit the spot.
I kept going for quite awhile until I got down almost to Coos Bay. I stopped for dinner at a nice seafood restaurant and then made my way to the Tugman State Park and set up my camp for the night.
Here are a few more pics of the day along the coast.
About 280 miles in half a day, not too bad.
