This is a blog about my motorcycle trip in July, 2010, from Kansas City out to the west coast and return. The trip took 15 days and covered 5600 miles. I had no incidents, no maintenance problems, and no tickets - my definition of a very successful trip.
Also keep in mind that I am writing this blog with several audiences in mind - from riding friends who are very experienced, to family and friends who don't know much about riding motorcycles at all.
My motorcycle is a 2004 BMW K1200GT, which is a fairly large, quite capable touring motorcycle. It has electronic cruise control, heated seats and handgrips, ABS brakes, and a windshield that moves up and down about 4 inches to block the wind. I mount a Garmin Nuvi 765T GPS on the handlebars to navigate with, and it is also my MP3 player.
I traveled by myself the entire trip, camping all but 2 nights. I experienced temperatures ranging from 39 up to 103 degrees.
Another aspect of my trip to remember is that all day, every day, every time I get on and move my bike, I am a believer in the philosophy of "ATGATT." That stands for "All The Gear, All The Time". I wear heavy leather riding boots, heavy textile mesh riding pants with kevlar knee pads and hip pads, a textile mesh riding jacket with kevlar elbow and shoulders pad and a padded back protector, heavy duty gloves, and a full face helmet. I also wear ear plugs to reduce the wind noise I experienced all day long for 15 days.
